I was introduced to Captain Beefheart by Questlove of The Roots. No, I don’t know Questlove personally but I feel like that we’re spiritual musical brethren. I can go to him and he can hip me up with the most freshest choice selections.   If there was one person that I can count on as far as musical knowledge, it's Questlove. He introduced me to stuff that I never would have thought that I would dig like getting me into Pet Sounds.  Obviously, the name Captain Beefheart caught my attention. He just sounds like a dude that lives on another planet or was mistaken for a pirate.  So, me always looking to quench my musical thirst did a little checking. As it turns out I when I was onWikipedia...I know, it’s not the most reliable of source but I doubt they would butcher someone’s discography.  I stumbled across Trout Mask Replica.  Okay, this is an interesting cover, a dude wearing a trout head, dressed in trippy haberdashery. I’m the type that buys albums based on the cover and I always promote DIFFERENT. So, of course the album cover feels at home with me because I embody that spirit of outer space. Next comes to taste test.  I want to make sure that this thing is legit. I cued it up.  Played it from top to bottom and it’s safe to say that I approve. Just like that little boy Mikey in those cereal commercials.  I had the great fortune to find Trout Mask Replica while I was digging and made sure that I had my seat belt on to go back on another trip to the stars.  I took my shoes off, baked me some hair pie and let my freak flag fly. They say you are what you listen to. Now, I see why I love Trout Mask Replica.  It’s so far out the galaxy, I don’t think it will ever come back.

Eddie Harris Instant Death (1972) Atlantic Records Dateline:  Saturday, April 25, 2020 No matter how you feel about sampling, hip hop does a great job at keeping the songs alive. It doesn’t matter if it’s keeping the original song intact or chopping it to the point where it's unrecognizable. You’re hearing the original source when you’re listening through the drum machine and the lyrics. As far as getting fair compensation goes, that’s another topic for another day. I don’t follow the x brought me here trend like they do on the comments section on YouTube but I was introduced to this album through Brand Nubian. For me, I get intrigued by how an artist uses a sample and if it’s creative and inspiring enough to make me want to track down the source and start a relationship with the song. GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) KRS (Knowledge Reigns Supreme), Intelligent Hoodlum, Professor Griff. MC’s back then was street but at the same time they was trying to school us on what’s going down, so we can take those tools that they taught us and go out to the world hip. Part of an MC's job was to elevate the masses.  Making sure that you got lifted through their wordplay.  Now, it feels like those days are lost.
